Next-generation modelling of community work and structural social work in Finland

The recently reformed Finnish Social Welfare Act obligates public social work to enact structural social work, and to address the community- and structural-level social problems behind individual cases. This article examines how community work and structural social work are conceived by early career social workers. The empirical data consists of 26 project plans by social work Master’s students studying in a working life-based part-time programme. International social work is a field of professional practice that is widespread in various countries around the world, yet still little explored in the literature and little known as a specific field of action. Exploring its definition and its possible applications in practice, starting from the analysis of a social work case study within an international project, aims to encourage the consolidation of a flexible, inclusive and plural thinking and method, necessary both for social workers working abroad, or in international exchange projects, and for those working with foreign users, offering the opportunity to broaden horizons and at the same time to strengthen the roots of the profession.

AbstractObjectives: Several studies have pointed at a co-occurrence between severe mental problems and relative poverty. Also users refer to their strained financial situation as one of their main problems. We lack knowledge about how persons ‒ still characterised in diagnostic manuals as having difficulty with their sense of reality and their ability to carry out goal-oriented actions ‒ manage the ‘double trouble’ of having a strained financial situation and mental problems.Method: Sixteen persons diagnosed with severe mental illness were interviewed about how they managed poverty in their everyday life. The pandemic has not just affected the health sphere: strong social effects of the emergency have added to the health risk, stressing on social relations and the deterioration of people's living conditions, and making those who are already fragile more fragile. Notwithstanding, during the emergency following the COVID-19 pandemic the attention was focused, indeed understandably, on the health aspects, widening the already existing misalignment between the health interventions and the social ones.
